posted 19 Nov 2011, 14:54 by David Reimer
Article | # Words |
---|---|
EDITORIAL + | 681 |
STEVEN J DUBY — Penal Substitution | 4955 |
JAMES EDWARD MCGOLDRICK — John Calvin | 8029 |
BRIAN G NAJAPFOUR — John Owen’s View | 3941 |
LAURA BARTLETT — Sortes Biblicae | 5861 |
JON RANDALL COUTTS — G.K. Chesterton | 4412 |
KEVIN CHIAROT — T.F. Torrance | 7352 |
ANDREW DAVID NASELLI — D.A. Carson | 11166 |
Total articles: | 46397 |
BOOK REVIEWS | 13957 |
TOTAL ISSUE: | 60354 |
That weighs in at 143pp., and then roughly 420 words/page.
If 128 pages still represents the “ideal” length for an issue, then we’re looking at 53,000+ words, not 55K as I thought before. Still, we were about one article “too long”, and maybe a couple reviews over, too.
It’s easy to let the girth creep up, so something to keep an eye on.
Autumn 2010 (28/2)

This is an overview for future reference of the word counts for 28/2:
Editorial = 970
Houston, Globalization = 5370
Ross, Church South = 6916
Fesko, Luther = 6705
Varma, Calvin = 7933
Ashford & Nelson, Frei = 9192
Reviews (original set) = 12704
Reviews (extras) = 2989
TOTAL = 52,779
Notes:
- we were 3 pages short of the 128 ideal number
- we had two article authors pull submissions at the last moment
- Ashford & Nelson should have been asked for a trim! (I had failed to include footnotes in my initial count)
- Articles total is 37086, Reviews total is 15693; ratio is about 70:30.
I think this means that for an “ideal” 128-page number, we want roughly 55,000 words of content, depending on page layout, etc. If we peg a sort of “norm” at 75% article content, and 25% reviews, our typical targets (per number) would be:
- Articles = 41250 (includes Editorial; so if 6 articles, about 6700 words each)
- Reviews = 13750 (or about 27 reviews at 500 words each)
Hopefully that gives us a good base to work from!
